Role of Whole Genome Sequencing in Tuberculosis Diagnosis and management

As per the World Health Organization, tuberculosis (TB) is one of the top infectious killers in the world claiming approximately 1.5 million lives every year. In spite of being preventable and curable, TB is still a challenge around the world as well as in India. Pharm Easy Labs and Thyrocare Technologies Limited, affiliated with the Academy of Advanced Medical Education (AAME) and organized a consensus meeting on the topic “Role of Whole Genome Sequencing in Tuberculosis” in New Delhi on March 20, 2022.

The symposium began with a warm welcome by Mr. Dharmil Sheth, CMD, Thyrocare Technologies Limited, and Dr. Agam Vora, MBBS, MD, DETRD, General Secretary, AAME. The chief guest of this meeting was Dr. Vijay Kumar Arora, MBBS, MD, Diploma in Chest Diseases (D.C.D) a Pulmonologist and Tuberculosis and chest Diseases Specialist with about 48 years of experience.

About The Event

The first speaker of the symposium- Dr. Chaitali Nikam, Deputy General Manager, Thyrocare Technologies Limited spoke about what is whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and its role in the diagnosis of TB. Dr. Rajendra P. Joshi, Deputy Director General (TB), Central TB Division, Health Ministry; Prof. Dr. Randeep Guleria, MD, DM, Director, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi and Dr. Agam Vora, shed light on national strategic plans and the way forward in eliminating TB as well as stressed on the importance of WGS in rapid TB diagnosis, fast-tracking eradication of this disease.

Post-lunch, Prof. Dr. S. K. Katiyar, Pulmonologist discussed and highlighted the importance of WGS in better TB management. In the end, Dr. Mangesh Tiwaskar, Consultant Physician & Diabetologist, Hon. General Secretary, Association of Physicians of India expressed gratitude towards the panellists as well as the delegates for being a part of this symposium and presented the panellists with a small token of thanks.
